Who Is Ix?

You carry the power of the Jaguar — intuition, stealth, and spiritual sight. The mightiest animal in the Maya world, you walk between worlds with grace and perceive what others miss. Ix people are often natural mystics, shamans, or deeply intuitive individuals.

In the Tzolk'in — the sacred 260-day calendar of the Maya — Ix is the 14th of twenty day signs, each representing a fundamental archetype of human experience. Your day sign is determined by the day you were born, and it shapes your personality, your purpose, and the cosmic energy you carry through life.

Ix is associated with the North direction, the element of Air, and the color White. In the Maya cosmological system, these associations connect you to specific natural forces, seasonal energies, and spiritual qualities.

The Classic Glyph

The Ix glyph depicts the spotted skin of the jaguar — dotted circles (jaguar rosettes) representing the most feared and revered predator of the Maya rainforest.

Archaeological Record

The jaguar was the supreme animal symbol of Maya royalty and supernatural power. Jaguar pelts covered thrones, jaguar imagery adorned royal regalia, and rulers incorporated "jaguar" (b'alam) into their names. At Tikal, the famous "Temple of the Great Jaguar" (Temple I) served as the funerary monument of Jasaw Chan K'awiil I (682–734 AD), whose tomb contained extraordinary jade offerings and jaguar iconography. The "Jaguar Paw" dynasty of El Zotz (located near Tikal) demonstrates how deeply the jaguar was embedded in political identity — the entire ruling lineage defined itself through the animal.

Cosmological Significance

The Jaguar God of the Underworld (the "Night Sun" or GIII of the Palenque Triad) was the sun during its nocturnal passage through Xibalba — a jaguar because the spots on its coat resembled the stars of the night sky. This concept linked the jaguar to shamanic vision: just as the jaguar could see in the dark forest, so the shaman could "see" into the supernatural realms invisible to ordinary perception. Linda Schele's research demonstrated that jaguar transformation was central to Classic Maya kingship — rulers literally "became" jaguars during ritual, donning pelts and assuming the animal's supernatural sight as their own.
