Really, Dockers? Really?
Posted
December 16, 2009
When we saw this ad from the Dockers website, part of us was thrilled and part of us was appalled. We were psyched because this is a great tool for us to use to demonstrate intersecting oppressions (sexism + ageism, for example). On the other hand, we are kinda disgusted that it exists. While we are tempted to write reams unpacking all that is happening in this ad, that seems less fun than all of us having our say about it. So, don’t hesitate…give it to us… the comment field is just below…

I thought it was awesome!!!
I thought it was awesome!!! In this day and age, this is a bit empowering to the indivdual man on a personal level, not men as a whole. If the subjest of the ad was reversed and the target audience was the female gender, then the response would be the opposite. You all would have no problem with the ad. . . . .That being said, as far as effective ads go... this probably isn't one of them. There are certain things you need(and don't need) in an ad. This ad is a bit lacking in some areas, and has too much in others.-Tyler Durden
These ads are really
These ads are really disgusting, and irresponsible. If you'd like to read about/meet some of the people who like these ads, please check out the Dockers fan page on Facebook, it's disgraceful. And if you'd like to support the anti-Dockers/anti-sexist movement, please please PLEASE join our group!

FYI--here is the response
FYI--here is the response from Levi's (parent company of Dockers) upon writing to complain about the ad: The Dockers(r) "Wear The Pants" campaign is intended to give men a reason to love their khakis, the focus of this campaign. We apologize if our efforts did not resonate with you.
What's the internet
What's the internet equivalent of stickering or graffiti? The style of this looks a lot like the CrimethInc gender poster; wish we could wheatpaste it (or something more awesome, but still including an EZ-bake oven reference) all over these Dockers ads. Interesting that their anxious fantasy of the "genderless society" we live in does still include little old ladies. I guess they needed something against which to define the Manly Man who will come rescue us from this mess of lattes, salad, and fashion. And maybe little old ladies are not properly gendered until they have been helped across the street. Up with the Raging Grannies, and the memory of Maggie Kuhn. And One Lucky Fellow: I love it.
While it is the case that
While it is the case that many boys/men get lost some where between childhood and adulthood, it seems unlikely that wearing or not wearing dockers or khakis is the root of that problem. What I see and hear is a society where violence and anger are still the only sanctioned emotions for boys to feel and while we have begun to create models that challenge those rigid gender lines, they are still staunchly in place. Nostalgia - myopic nostalgia - for a time when "men were men" is lazy and tired at best and dangerous at worst. The ad is a cheap and not even very interesting comment on contemporary society. I agree with the person who said this is simply more evidence of the need for public art to fill our space rather than advertisements. Shame on Dockers for it's pandering to sexism and misogyny to sell pants - and yeah when did Khakis become the symbol of masculinity?
"man-ifesto"?! how tired. at
"man-ifesto"?! how tired. at least if you're going to be misogynist say something interesting to give us something real to talk about. all of this "oh my, you've taken away my manhood with the control of your skim-milk lattes and a vegetables and now who's going to save the little old ladies" is wearisome.
more wearisome, however, is the possibility that people will respond to it. that they will think it's funny, that criticism is "taking it too seriously" because, really, who could think that khakis are the bastion of "manliness." it's like spike, the man channel, vomited on a crappy pants ad. and anyone who spends their time critiquing or analyzing the results is "wasting their time" because obviously it's all tongue-in-cheek. or something. because, clearly, this appeals to someone. and that's what's most upsetting.
Just to add to this
Just to add to this discussion-- Focus on the Family is hailing this ad as a victory for the crusade to maintain traditional gender roles. While some bloggers encourage folks to call to complain about this ad, the Focus on the Family bloggers are encouraging folks to call to thank the company for standing up for manhood.
I guess their sales are
I guess their sales are really, really sucking these days. Is this really going to appeal to anyone anymore? Also, I would guess that little old ladies are managing just fine without dockers-wearing saviors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjcoRFcmQuo.
Right on, Lane! Personally, I
Right on, Lane! Personally, I find the whole thing offensive--mostly this whole "decline of civilization" thing they're asserting as somehow connected to the decline of masculinity among men (and the rise of it among women) which has allegedly produced a genderless society? Just b/c some guys eat salad and some women eat steak (not metioned, but I think it's implied as being a problem) and an older woman may actually be capable of crossing the street without the patronizing assistance of a younger man does not mean our society is any less gendered. Shame on Dockers! If I owned any dockers pants, I would burn them.
Funny, I never thought of
Funny, I never thought of Dockers as representing manhood in the way that this ad seems to imply. Blue jeans, maybe, but khakis? They seem as metrosexual as, say, lattes or anything else. Maybe that's why they are so anxious to prove themselves otherwise--the lady dost protest too much? I mean, the man... There is some truth in this ad though. It would be nice if women had some help in their work of raising children (including but not limited to disciplining them), caring for the eldery, and repairing war torn cities. These are tasks that have be overwhelming left to women in the U.S. and around the world. Men, we are waiting for you.
Great. Somebody watched Glenn
Great. Somebody watched Glenn Beck and then decided to write an ad for pants that his viewers would want to buy.
q;asldkgh;sldkg!!!!!! this is
q;asldkgh;sldkg!!!!!! this is just totally absurd. why didn't anyone tell me we were living in a genderless society? i feel so out of the loop! also did we end misogyny and i missed it? blast. and now it's coming back and men will be wearing the pants again... though i have to admit, i feel a little safer in this world knowing that there will be heroes again, androgyny-hating heroes who will keep the kids in line.
The folks at Dockers are
The folks at Dockers are obviously ignorant of the fierce drag queens of the stonewall rebellion and high femmes like Joan Nestle. Clearly no one told them that we never gave up our power, chivalry, and gender performances when we cast off patriarchy and misogyny. This is yet another sign that public space should be covered with free art, not consumer advertisements.
I like this new world much
I like this new world much better than the outdated world of Dockers.Strong women have improved my life as a man.
Good thing Dockers is here to
Good thing Dockers is here to make sure we take away whatever power women have, and to hide the overwhelming domination men continue to have over women, regardless of the fact that some men eat lettuce and dressing sometimes.
