Our Work

Jewish Feminist Education

Ma'yan has long recognized the centrality of education in promoting progressive change for Jewish women and girls. From our earliest days, Ma'yan has supported the development and circulation of Jewish feminist scholarship and we continue to encourage the integration of women into Jewish educational theory and practice. Our educational initiatives have included:

  • Publishing Journey, a journal of Jewish feminist arts and letters. Journey was published three times a year between 1997 and 2004, and included new rituals, original artwork, literary and narrative nonfiction, profiles of changemakers, and listings of innovative resources and programs.
  • Creating Women of Valor posters in collaboration with the Jewish Women's Archive. These posters and supplementary resource materials profile historical Jewish women and have been distributed to thousands of schools, synagogues, and JCCs in observance of Women's History Month.
  • Establishing the Jewish Feminist Research Group, an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, students, teachers, and writers interested in the intersection of feminist scholarship and Jewish studies. The group was transferred to the Jewish Theological Seminary's Women's Studies Department and continues to meet regularly to share and critique unpublished research and works-in-progress.
  • Creating and maintaining the Ma'yan Library, a collection of Jewish and secular feminist texts and other reference materials, housed in the Beit Midrash at the JCC in Manhattan. Although the collection is non-circulating, the Ma'yan Library is available for on-site examination by interested scholars and individuals. To inquire about it availability, please contact Ma'yan here.
